Announcing New Employee Self-Registration Tool
We love customer feedback at SafeSchools because it helps us make our software better.  In that light we're proud to announce a new feature -- a self-registration tool.  If you're a district or school that's had some trouble getting your employee data to us, now there’s a simple way to get started.  Self-registration enables employees to independently register themselves into SafeSchools and then receive the right training courses immediately.  It’s that easy!  Best of all, self-registration enables schools to start training with almost no administrative prep time!

SafeSchools Saves Lives!
Since keeping school staff and students safe is SafeSchools’ guiding purpose, we were thrilled to hear the following story from one of our district leaders in Indiana.

“SafeSchools is an excellent way to keep safety training fresh in the minds of staff members.  We recently had an elementary student choke on a piece of food in the cafeteria.  A staff member was able to successfully dislodge the obstruction by performing the Heimlich Maneuver.  That staff member later attributed knowing how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver in part on the information and demonstrations she viewed in the SafeSchools CPR and First Aid Courses.”

Thanks for sharing this story, and congratulations to your life-saving staff member!

New Courses Coming Soon
SafeSchools is expanding to 100 school-specific safety courses in seven different categories.  Here’s a list of some that you can expect to see in the near future (click on the course title to view a more detailed description):

Take a Stand Against Bullying February 25th
A simple pink shirt initially served as a target for school bullies at a Canadian high school.  Thanks to the efforts of two determined students, however, pink t-shirts now serve as an international symbol of empowerment.  It all started when 12th graders David Shepherd and Travis Price witnessed bullies harassing a 9th grader for wearing a pink polo shirt on the first day of school.  Deciding “enough was enough,” the two boys began an email campaign that same day encouraging their classmates to stand up to bullies by wearing pink t-shirts to school the next day.  They received an outpouring of support when hundreds of their classmates showed up in pink shirts the next day – and ultimately silenced the bullies.  This February 25th you can be a part of an international movement against bullying by wearing a pink shirt.

School Safety Tip of the Month: Fire Extinguisher Safety
Different types of fire extinguishers are available to combat the different classifications of fires.  The three most common extinguishers are: Water, Carbon Dioxide, and Dry Chemical.  Most fire extinguishers will have a symbol on it that clearly displays which type of fire it is designed to extinguish.  Before deciding to fight a fire, be sure you know what is burning.  If you don’t know what is fueling the fire, then you will not be able to determine the type of fire extinguisher that is necessary to put it out.

School Safety Quote of the Month: Teacher Prevents Tragedy
“It was a very alert teacher that saw something that didn’t seem right (who) investigated, and there’s no doubt in my mind she prevented a tragedy,” said Pittsburgh Public Schools Safety Chief Bob Fadzen, in regards to an observant teacher who discovered a loaded gun in a second-grader’s backpack and immediately notified school authorities.  The second-grader claimed to have brought the gun to protect himself from bullies.
